When someone says Ruby, the first thing that comes to mind is the precious stone or the name Ruby. In tech, it has a whole other meaning. Ruby is a programming language much like the more commonly known Java or Python.
Ruby was designed and developed by Yukihiro “Matz” Matsumoto in Japan with the first release in 1995. For those that use Ruby, they describe it as a beautiful, artful language that is known to be flexible because it allows programmers to make modifications to various parts of the language if desired.
As Ruby continued to gain popularity in the world, the Nairuby community was started in 2010 with the aim of promoting an open source culture. The community currently has over 4000 members spread across East Africa made of developers, entrepreneurs, designers and freelancers.
Every year since 2015, the Nairuby holds the RubyConf which is an inclusive conference which provides an opportunity for developers and non-developers to meet, connect, share ideas and do some hacking.
This year’s RubyConf was ran from 25th-27th July 2019 at iHub Nairobi with the theme Agile, Open Source and Entrepreneurship. The conference saw the coming together of Ruby programmers from all levels across the globe who had an opportunity to share their experiences.
Lipa Later has been using Ruby since inception and was a sponsor of the RubyConf. Speaking at the event was Purity Maina, the lead software engineer at Lipa Later where she spoke on blitzscaling and how “It prioritizes speed over efficiency in an environment of uncertainty, and has allowed us to go from “start-up” to ‘scale up’ at a furious pace that captures the market.”
